Income, margins and costs
The Hindu reports that net interest income rose 17.7% to ₹25,339 crore. Net interest margin, the gap between what the bank earns on loans and investments and what it pays on funding, was 4.18%, compared with 4.36% in the June quarter and 4.30% a year earlier. Operating expenses rose 8.5% to ₹12,811 crore. Provisions, excluding tax, were ₹851 crore against ₹914 crore a year earlier.
Mint reports that profit before tax rose 20.4% to ₹19,724 crore, and that treasury recorded a loss of ₹230 crore as government bond yields rose. Excluding treasury, it says, profit before tax rose 23.4%.
The Hindu BusinessLine, citing PTI, reports consolidated net profit of ₹16,333 crore, up 22.28% from ₹13,357 crore. Some headlines cite ₹16,333 crore and 22%; the standalone figures are ₹14,843 crore and 20.1%.
Loans and deposits
According to The Hindu, total advances rose 30% year-on-year and 12.3% from the previous quarter to ₹18,31,580 crore, and deposits rose 27.1% to ₹20,49,874 crore. The bank said that excluding loans made by its international branches against foreign currency non-resident (bank) deposits, known as FCNR(B), loan growth was 24.1%, and that excluding those deposits, deposit growth was 17%. Retail and rural loans grew 14.8% and the corporate portfolio 30.6%.
Mint reports that the bank raised about $18 billion in FCNR(B) deposits under a Reserve Bank of India swap facility, and that executive director Sandeep Batra said the landed cost of these deposits was about 6.5%. It reports that the credit card book shrank 9.7% year-on-year, which management attributed mainly to a high base and exit from some customer segments, with Batra saying it was not a credit issue.
Asset quality and capital
PTI, via BusinessLine, reports that the gross non-performing asset ratio improved to 1.20% from 1.38% a quarter earlier and 1.58% a year earlier. The Hindu reports that the provisioning coverage ratio was 75.0%, and that the total capital adequacy ratio was 16.68% and the common equity tier 1 ratio 16.01%, against regulatory minimums of 11.70% and 8.20%.
The bank's outlook for margins
Mint reports that Batra said, at a press conference on Saturday, that the full effect of the FCNR(B) deposit costs would largely show up in the third quarter, after which the bank expects margins to start moving up even at current policy rates. He attributed about 9 to 10 basis points of the margin decline to the change in deposit mix, according to the same report. The bank's average current and savings account ratio was 35.8%, down from 38.1% in the June quarter, Mint reports.
Still open
- How much further the margin falls in the October-December quarter is not known; the bank said the full cost of FCNR(B) deposits would show up in that quarter.
