Tesla's 'flying' Roadster demo: what Musk said and what the reports describe

Elon Musk said the future does have flying cars after a Texas demonstration. Reports describe a ramp launch, a mid-air flip and a landing, and no sustained flight.

The claim

Elon Musk said the future does have flying cars, presenting Tesla's new Roadster as a flying car after the Texas demonstration.

Missing context

Reports read describe a ramp-launched flip and landing, and in some accounts a short jump over parked cars, by a car with no driver. None describes sustained flight, and the performance figures are Tesla's own.

Missing context: Accurate as far as it goes, but it leaves out something the reports show matters. What our labels mean

Tesla unveiled a new version of its Roadster sports car at a SpaceX test facility in Texas on October 15, 2026, in an event that outlets in India and elsewhere headlined as a flying car. Elon Musk posted that, in the words reported by Pratidin Time, "Turns out the future does have flying cars." This article sets that claim against what the reports describe.

What the reports say was shown

The reports agree on the broad outline. The Free Press Journal says the car drove up a curved ramp, was held to the surface by a fan-based suction system until it was fully inverted, and was then launched off the ramp by compressed-air thrusters. It flipped in mid-air and landed safely. That report describes the result as a limited flight, not sustained flying.

Ada Derana gives a similar account and adds that the car had no driver. It reports Musk giving safety as the reason for that and acknowledging that success is not guaranteed. It also says the car later jumped over a line of parked Tesla vehicles and used rear jets to reach 60 mph quickly. Pratidin Time describes a second stunt in which a car hovered while moving over several Teslas. Telangana Today (IANS) says the car became airborne for a short distance and landed safely.

None of the four reports read describes flight beyond these short maneuvers. Ada Derana quotes a Smithsonian curator, Roger Connor, as calling what was shown hopping, and says long-range flight and fast road driving in the same vehicle remain unproven.

Figures Tesla gave

The performance numbers in the reports come from Tesla and were not independently verified. They also differ between reports. The Free Press Journal lists three versions with 0-60 mph times of under 1.6 seconds (Performance), under 0.9 seconds (Thrust) and under 0.59 seconds (Rocket), and a range above 300 miles. Ada Derana says under a second, and Pratidin Time says 0.81 seconds. Telangana Today gives an expected range of about 300 miles and a top speed above 230 mph.

The Free Press Journal reports reservation payments of $50,000 for Performance and $250,000 for Thrust, with the Rocket version by invitation only and no final prices announced. Musk said production would begin in 2028, according to the Free Press Journal and Ada Derana. Telangana Today says Tesla gave no timeline for commercial availability of the feature.

What the record shows

The demonstration took place and the car left the ramp and landed, according to every report read. What the reports do not show is a car that flies in the sense of sustained, controlled flight, or any independent test of the figures Tesla gave. The location is given as McGregor in the Free Press Journal and near Waco in Pratidin Time.

Still open

  • The 0-60 mph figures differ across reports (under 1.6, 0.9, 0.59, 0.81 seconds and 'under a second'), partly because they refer to different versions.
  • Reports differ on whether Tesla gave a production timeline: two cite 2028, while Telangana Today says no timeline was given.
