A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Baqen County in the city of Nagqu, in northern Tibet, at 10:33 p.m. local time on Thursday 22 October, killing at least 16 people and collapsing hundreds of homes, Chinese official media reported (Mizoram Post, New York Post, Radio-Canada (fr)). The Nagqu media office, citing city government officials, said at least 339 homes collapsed and 20 livestock sheds were damaged, and that search and rescue work continued (Guardian, Hindustan Times). Injury counts rose through Friday, from 32 to 76 according to Chinese state media cited by Tagesspiegel (Tagesspiegel).

What every report agrees on

Every report places the quake in Tibet on the evening of 22 October at magnitude 7, with at least 16 dead and hundreds of homes destroyed, sourced to Xinhua and the Nagqu emergency management office (Mizoram Post, Últimas Noticias, France 24). The epicentre was in Baqen County near the border with Qinghai province, a high-altitude and remote mountainous area (Mizoram Post, The Indian Express, n-tv). Aftershocks followed, including two measured at magnitude 5.2 and 5 (France 24, Tagesschau (de)). Chinese sources gave the depth as about 10 km (Tagesspiegel, Hindustan Times), while the Mizoram Post noted the US Geological Survey figure of 18 km (Mizoram Post). The Guardian described it as the biggest quake in the region in the past five years (Guardian). No report in the set disputes the official death toll or the account of the response.

How the left-leaning press told it

Guardian, The Indian Express and Hindustan Times: Rescue effort and damage count

Of the outlets with a published rating, only left-leaning ones carried the story, and they carried the state-media account and the scale of the rescue. The Guardian, rated centre-left, led on the toll of 16 dead and 54 injured and on the 339 homes reported collapsed and 20 livestock sheds damaged by the Nagqu media office (Guardian). The Indian Express, rated centre-left, led instead on surveillance footage showing people running from buildings as the ground shook, citing Reuters figures of 16 dead and 76 injured (The Indian Express), while Hindustan Times, rated centre-left, reported 16 dead, 54 injured and a depth of 10 km (Hindustan Times).

How other outlets told it

Tagesspiegel, New York Post, n-tv, Radio-Canada (fr), Tagesschau (de) and Últimas Noticias: no published side rating

These outlets have no published side rating. Tagesspiegel foregrounded the continuing search and rescue effort and the revision of the injured count from 32 to 76 (Tagesspiegel). The New York Post ran the Associated Press account, reporting a magnitude 7 quake in China's Tibet region on Thursday evening that killed at least 16 people, injured 54 and collapsed hundreds of homes in the northern regional city of Nagqu, attributed to official media (New York Post); it noted that search efforts were under way (New York Post), and its headline described the quake as powerful and gave the same toll as its text (New York Post). n-tv described the epicentre at an altitude of about 4,800 metres and called it the strongest quake of the year (n-tv). Radio-Canada led on Xi Jinping's call for a maximum rescue effort as reported by Xinhua, alongside 16 dead and 46 injured (Radio-Canada (fr)), and Tagesschau reported 16 dead, at least 54 injured and several aftershocks (Tagesschau (de)). Últimas Noticias reported that Chinese authorities said 16 people died in the magnitude 7 quake in Baqen district, Nagqu, in the Xizang autonomous region (Últimas Noticias), and, citing the city emergency management office via Xinhua, put the injured at 46 and said 11 of them were in a serious condition (Últimas Noticias).

How state media told it

France 24: Seismic data and official response

France 24, a state-funded broadcaster, reported the US Geological Survey timing of 16:33 GMT and two aftershocks of magnitude 5.2 and 5, with Xinhua citing the emergency management office (France 24).

What the record shows

The reports rest on the same sources: Xinhua, CCTV and the Nagqu emergency management office (Mizoram Post, Últimas Noticias, The Indian Express). Injury totals differ by the time of publication, with 32 and later 76 in Tagesspiegel (Tagesspiegel), 46 in Radio-Canada and Últimas Noticias (Radio-Canada (fr), Últimas Noticias), 54 in the Guardian, New York Post, Hindustan Times and Tagesschau (Guardian, New York Post, Hindustan Times, Tagesschau (de)), and 76 in The Indian Express (The Indian Express). Depth is given as about 10 km from Chinese sources (Tagesspiegel, Hindustan Times) and 18 km from the USGS (Mizoram Post). Sud Ouest's headline says at least 18 dead and nearly 80 injured while its text reports the magnitude 7 quake in a remote mountainous area 390 km north-east of Lhasa (Sud Ouest). Radio-Canada and Sud Ouest report Xi Jinping calling for all possible rescue effort, with Sud Ouest also citing his reference to a significant number of victims (Radio-Canada (fr), Sud Ouest). No report in the set independently verifies the official figures or questions the adequacy of the response.
