A man fired bursts from a vehicle at pedestrians in the towns of Trappes and La Verriere, west of Paris, on Friday morning, killing one person and wounding at least four others, French authorities said (franceinfo, DW). A suspect was arrested near Trappes and taken into custody, and France's National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office took charge of the case (The New Indian Express, franceinfo, elDiario.es). Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the shootings as a terrorist crime and said shots were fired at three separate locations in under 15 minutes (DW, The Economic Times).

What every report agrees on

All the reports place the attack on Friday morning, at around 10.30, with a man shooting from a car at people in the street in Trappes and La Verriere, about 20 to 30 kilometres west of Paris (Daily Mail, elDiario.es, La Vanguardia). They agree one person was killed and that several others were wounded, among them a 12-year-old girl, with counts given as four injured (DW, elDiario.es) or five (Daily Mirror, The Economic Times, Daily Mail); the Daily Mirror says three of the injured were seriously hurt (Daily Mirror). The weapon is described as an automatic weapon or a submachine gun (Tagesspiegel, La Dépêche du Midi). The gunman was arrested and placed in custody, as Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu confirmed (franceinfo, The National), and the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation (Tagesschau (de), elDiario.es). Ali Rabeh, mayor of Trappes, told broadcasters the man drove through several neighbourhoods firing apparently at random and seemed intent on causing as many casualties as possible (Daily Mail, The National).

How the left-leaning press told it

Der Spiegel (de) and The New Indian Express: Racist targeting, terror inquiry

Of the outlets with a published rating, Der Spiegel reported Macron telling people in Trappes that a man was killed on the basis of a racist ideology and that victims were targeted for their skin colour or presumed religion (Der Spiegel (de)), while The New Indian Express stayed with the arrest, the casualty count and an unclear motive (The New Indian Express).

How the right-leaning press told it

The Economic Times: Attack, response and inquiry

One outlet with a published right-side rating covered it. The Economic Times, rated centre-right, reported the anti-terrorism prosecutors taking over and Nunez speaking of a terrorist crime, with the three locations and the timing (The Economic Times).

How other outlets told it

Mediapart, 20minutos, elDiario.es, Tagesspiegel, Daily Mirror, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Daily Mail, franceinfo, Tagesschau (de), La Vanguardia and Winnipeg Free Press: no published side rating

These outlets have no published side rating. Mediapart led on the suspicion that the gunman wanted to attack people of immigrant background and on Nunez's words about a terrorist crime (Mediapart); 20minutos and elDiario.es framed the case as a terrorist attack with racist motivation because the victims were people of colour (20minutos, elDiario.es). Tagesspiegel wrote that investigators and politicians consider a racist background possible (Tagesspiegel). The Daily Mirror stayed with the arrest, the casualty count and an unclear motive (Daily Mirror). Frankfurter Allgemeine led on Macron calling the shooting a racist terrorist attack and saying the day marked a turning point for the republic and the nation (Frankfurter Allgemeine). The Daily Mail centred the mayor's account that the gunman fired randomly and appeared intent on causing as many casualties as possible, and the wounding of a 12-year-old girl (Daily Mail). Franceinfo led on the shooter's arrest and the anti-terrorism prosecutors taking the case (franceinfo), and Tagesschau said the prosecutors are also examining whether there is a racist background (Tagesschau (de)). La Vanguardia reported that the office took the case because indications pointed to a possible racist motive, and gave the suspect's age as 39 and said he lived in the area (La Vanguardia), and the Winnipeg Free Press headlined a suspected racist attack (Winnipeg Free Press).

How state media told it

DW: Terror inquiry, possible racist motive. The National: Terror investigation launched

DW, a state-funded broadcaster, carried Nunez's description of a terrorist crime and the three shooting sites (DW). The National, rated state, reported the deaths and injuries as announced by Prime Minister Lecornu and the arrest of a suspect, and noted firefighters were called to a petrol station where shooting took place (The National). It carried the Trappes mayor's account to BFMTV that a man fired from his car and appeared to be shooting at random (The National). It framed the story as a terror investigation without asserting a motive (The National).

Among the outlets with a published rating, coverage of this story does not divide along left and right lines; most outlets have no published rating.

What the record shows

The documented elements are the official statements the reports cite: Lecornu confirming the arrest and saying security and judicial resources were mobilised (franceinfo, The New Indian Express), Nunez calling the shootings a terrorist crime at three locations within 15 minutes (DW, The Economic Times), and the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office taking over (elDiario.es, Tagesschau (de)). Macron, visiting Trappes, described a racist terrorist attack and said a man was killed on the basis of a racist ideology, with victims targeted for their skin colour or presumed religion (Frankfurter Allgemeine, Der Spiegel (de)). The racist motive itself is at the stage of examination rather than finding: Tagesschau says prosecutors are checking whether there is a racist background (Tagesschau (de)), La Vanguardia says indications point to a possible motive (La Vanguardia), Tagesspiegel says investigators and politicians consider it possible (Tagesspiegel), and The New Indian Express reports police saying the motive remained unclear (The New Indian Express). The suspicion that the gunman targeted people of immigrant background is attributed in Mediapart's account (Mediapart); the casualty count differs between reports giving four wounded (DW) and five (The Economic Times, Daily Mirror). No report in this set disputes the racist-terror reading.
