Akash Ambani outlines Jio growth plan ahead of IPO, citing a $1.4 trillion digital economy
Jio Platforms' managing director said the company will focus on mobile upgrades, home broadband and enterprise services. The figures in the reports are company statements.
Akash Ambani, managing director of Jio Platforms, set out the company's growth plans ahead of its proposed initial public offering, saying India's digital economy is projected to reach about $1.4 trillion by FY31. Reports of his remarks appeared on October 15 and October 17. All the figures below are statements by Ambani or Jio, as reported, and the reports read do not independently verify them.
Scale and finances
According to Rising Kashmir, Ambani said Jio serves 53 crore Indians and carries over 60% of India's data traffic. Greater Kashmir puts the connectivity customer base at about 533 million. Rising Kashmir reports he cited cumulative EBITDA of over Rs 76,000 crore across ten years, a first-quarter EBITDA margin of 53.3%, and revenue rising from about Rs 1,09,000 crore to over Rs 1,46,000 crore over three years. He also said Jio rolled out 5G in 19 months to cover 99% of the population.
On pricing, Rising Kashmir reports Ambani said data cost about Rs 228 per GB in 2016, against Rs 7.5 per GB across the industry now and Rs 4.9 per GB on Jio's network.
The growth engines
Greater Kashmir lists three:
- Mobility: about 340 million new 4G and 5G customers between FY26 and FY31, including roughly 100 million first-time mobile users and 240 million 2G users moving to 4G or 5G.
- Home broadband: about 28.6 million fixed broadband customers now and a target of 100 million homes, with no deadline given. Jio says it captured about 67.5% of India's net fixed broadband additions in FY26. Rising Kashmir reports Ambani said standard 5G fixed wireless access does not scale and that Jio uses its own wireless technology on an unlicensed 5G band.
- Enterprise and international: Jio puts the addressable enterprise digital services market at Rs 5.1 lakh crore, about $56.8 billion, and says about 65% of the country's bank branches are connected to its network. Abroad, it plans to act as a managed services partner for telecom operators rather than a vendor.
Rising Kashmir also reports Ambani said India could become an exporter rather than an importer of technology, and that 6G is on the horizon and would arrive as a software upgrade rather than a new infrastructure build.
The IPO
The two reports of Ambani's remarks give no IPO size, valuation or date. Telangana Today, in an unsigned article published October 17 that quotes three brokerages and no critics, lists an issue size of Rs 30,213 crore, a subscription window of October 21 to 23 and a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119. Greater Kashmir says Isha Ambani and Uday Kotak also spoke at the event.
